The World Cup Final Is a Spain Trap

Spain conceded one goal in seven World Cup games. They are unbeaten in 37 straight matches. They shut down Kylian Mbappe and France 2-0 without breaking a sweat. On paper, Spain -164 for the World Cup Final on Sunday looks like the most obvious bet in sports history.

That should terrify you.

The books opened Spain at -164 and that is where the public money went. Argentina came back at +134 on DraftKings — roughly 42% implied probability to lift the trophy. The sharper prediction markets have it at 60-40 Spain. The sportsbooks price it as a coin flip closer than the moneyline suggests. That is where the value lives.

Here is what those bettors know: Argentina has won four knockout games at this World Cup and trailed in all four of them. They came back from 2-0 down against Egypt in the 78th minute — the first team to ever do that in a World Cup and walk away with the win. They went to extra time against Switzerland. They needed Lionel Messi to bail them out against England.

About that.

In the 85th minute against England, Messi picked up the ball off a corner, got the return pass, and spotted Enzo Fernandez from 25 yards out. Goal. Then in the 90th-plus-2, he sent a pinpoint cross into the box and Lautaro Martinez headed home the winner. Argentina were down 1-0, then up 2-1, then through to the final.

Messi now has 10 World Cup assists — more than any player since 1966. He has 21 career World Cup goals. He is 39 years old and delivering in the 90th minute of semifinals. The guy has been doing this his entire career and there is still no market for it.

The Under 2.5 goals is -145 to -150 across the major books. Both defenses are elite and this matchup projects as low-scoring — Spain gave up 1 goal in the entire tournament, and even Argentina’s chaotic knockout games never involved more than 5 total goals. This is a 1-1 game in extra time or a 1-0 final. Betting the over at anything near even money is a different kind of trap than Spain -164, and not a trap anyone should walk into either.

Spain looked great against France, but France came in exhausted and one-dimensional without a healthy Mbappe. La Roja has not played a team as athletic and well-organized as Argentina all tournament. Spain controls the ball. Argentina counters on the break. And Argentina with Messi running in transition at MetLife Stadium on Sunday is not a team that rolls over for anyone.

We called Morocco a live dog before the quarters in the quarterfinals preview and Morocco nearly did it. Argentina at +134 is a shorter price, but Argentina is a substantially better team.

Spain may absolutely win this thing. They may win it 2-0 and make everyone look silly for overthinking it. But betting -164 on form alone when you are ignoring a defending champion, the greatest player in World Cup history at his best, and a team that has clawed its way out of every hole they have fallen into this summer — that is the public bet. And the public bet in the World Cup Final is always the hardest one to cash.

Take Argentina at +134 or better and let it ride.
